Flu season is officially here and it is important that we take the necessary steps to keep ourselves and our families healthy. This is especially the case for seniors. There are several things that one can do to prevent the flu. The most effective way is to get the flu shot. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone receive the flu vaccine as soon as it is available in your community. To be fully protected you need to receive the shot twice. It is safe and since the viruses in the vaccine are inactive, you cannot get the flu from the flu shot. It is important to remember that the flu vaccine does not cover all strains of the flu, therefore in addition to being vaccinated, follow these everyday healthy tips:
Be proactive. By keeping yourself healthy, you are not only benefiting yourself, you are protecting your spouse, children and grandchildren. It is still not too late to be vaccinated.
